Andy Grech

President

Andy is a PE teacher by profession, but his main interest lies in sport management and development. He is currently in his third year of doctorate studies.

Being a national team athlete himself for a decade spanning (between 2005 and 2015), he took part in various events around Europe and medaled obtained medals at two GSSE games. He seeks to understand the basic needs of an athlete requires and bases his decisions and actions for the sakein line with the requirements of the athletes and coaches. Andy believes that Malta has what it takes to be a perfect destination for international events and training camps and has focused part of his manifesto on the bringing foreign athletes to our shores.

He is currently running the building of the Marsa High Performance Facility Project and forms part of the technical committee in preparation for GSSE 2023.

Aldrin Cassar

General Secretary

Aldrin Cassar is an experienced Cargo Agent with a history of working in the airlines/aviation industry for more than 30 years. He is skilled in Operations Management, Responsible Care, Airports, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Event Management. Aldrin is an operations professional with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching from University of Malta.

His sporting background is firmly based in football with a playing career spanning from 1980 till 2001. During his career he played with Victoria Hotspurs, Fgura United, Mosta FC, and Zurrieq FC. Personal club honours include 4 Gozo League Championships, 7 Gozo Super Cups, 1 GFA Cup, 1 Gozo Republic Cup, 1 Millenium Cup, 1 MFA 2 nd Division Championship, 1 MFA 2 nd /3 rd Ko Competition. Aldrin Cassar also served as Head Coach in 1995/96 with Hibernians FC Women, Head Coach in 2011/12 with Victoria Hotpurs FC and U/17 Coach with Mellieha FC.

Currently Mr Cassar is also serving as Vice Secretary for Malta Employees Sports Association, a position he has been holding for the past three years. He is also Athletics Malta’s new General secretary.

Darren Micallef

Treasurer

Darren Micallef is an accountant by profession and has seven years’ experience with audit firms followed by thirteen years in industry. After starting with one of the big audit firms in Malta, Darren eventually gained experience in established firms such as Where’s Everybody and Project Technik Group, where he served as Group Financial Controller.

He has just recently founded his own private practice providing accounting, management, taxation, payroll and company secretarial services.

Darren also takes an active interest in athletics, particularly in long distance running.
He has been participating in the National Road Running League for the last four years. He ran his best half marathon in Valencia in October 2019, finishing at 1:25’34”. His only full marathon was done in December 2018 clocking 3:13’52”.

He also serves as President for Viola Club Malta, the local fan club of AC Fiorentina.

Daniel Calleja Scicluna

Head of Projects

Daniel is a Mechanical / Biomedical Engineer by profession, currently occupying the role of a senior engineer at a global healthcare company.
Daniel's love and passion for running goes back to his secondary school years. Daniel hasHe trained for about 7-8 years as a sprinter at local club level, eventually transitioning to long distance running with one of Malta's local running clubs. Daniel not only holds has a passion for training the sport but has also coached the sport for about 8 years with Sport Malta.
Daniel truly believes that athletics in Malta has immense potential. Irrespective of individual abilities, athletes must not only be given the right opportunities and coaching, but a safe and world class infrastructure to train and compete within. Malta's geographic size is no limitation to our abilities and should never limit us from putting the country on the world map.

Claudette Caruana

Council member

Claudette is a primary school teacher by profession. Around nine years ago, her son started training athletics. Apart from encouraging him and supporting him, she used to read on the subject to update herself about rules and regulations both to help her son, and to strengthen her knowledge. Later, she started practicing officiating throws during her son's training sessions and became an official during competitions. In August 2019, she was appointed as President of Rush Athletic Club.

Dr. Natalino Caruana De Brincat

Council member / legal counsel

Being brought up in a world of endurance events, founding a unique sports club based on endurance swimming, cycling and running is self-explanatory. Being an ambitious Malta. He believes that his motivation lies in the potential our athletes have, given the list variety of limitations they frequently face.individual, he Dr Caruana De Brincat decided to move onto a more aspiring challenge and become a member on the Athletics Malta Council. He also now acts as legal counsel to the same organization. A self-proclaimed stickler to protocol, effective administration, good governance, values and ethical responsibility, his first large undertaking was a total overhaul of the Athletics Malta’s policies, in the hope of preparing a strong platform for our stakeholders – no matter the age or ability). Moreover, his aim is to support the evolve evolution of the Maltese athletic scenario towards a more professional status. In the past months he was has also been directly involved in the rebranding exercise of Athletics

Anthony Fava

Council member

Currently the most senior Member serving on the Council of Athletics Malta, Anthony (Toni) was first co-opted on the Council following the 1996 AGM. He has served local athletics uninterruptedly except for one year between April 2018 and March 2019. In 1997, having been successful in an IAAF course held in Malta, he obtained an ‘officials license’ certification to cover all disciplines. Toni, has been instrumental in the organization of many international events held in Malta, namely the 2003 GSSE games, the locally organized ETCH in 2010, 2017 as well as the annual EAP meet.
Throughout these years he served as a Communications Coordinator for the Association with a responsibility to maintain and issue all results of Association competitions and its Record record keeping. Tony is currently occupying a post within Pembroke Athleta athletics and triathlon club.

Duncan Abdilla

Council member

Duncan has been in the running scene for around 6 years, since the start of his personal transformation from being a totally unfit person to becoming a person whose life revolves around running and fitness. He managed to combine his newly found passion with his career, eventually became becoming a full-time personal trainer, group fitness instructor, long distance running coach and more recently a qualified massage therapist, whilst also focusing on his training program.
Duncan’s daily energy and motivation is seeing others succeed and meeting their individual goals.
Duncan is currently the General Secretary of La Salle Athletics club.

Antonella Chouhal

Council member

With 20 years of involvement in the sport, Antonella has gained great experience in Discus/Shot Put/Hammer field events, holding the women’s national records for all three events. Antonella has also represented Malta in several international meetings. Her recent achievements included a silver medal in the discus throw at the Ancona European Championship Masters 2016, and 4th place in the weight throw at the same meet. In 2017 she was Bronze medallist in the Weight Throw European Masters Championships in Denmark and Bronze medallist in Madrid European indoor 2018 in the hammer throw. In 2019 she was silver medallist in the Weight Throw and Discus and Bronze medalist in the Hammer in the World Indoor Masters Championships held in Poland. In the European Masters Championships held in Venice she achieved Bronze in the Throwing Pentathlon.
Antonella is a qualified track and field coach. Currently, she serves as General Secretary with Rush AC.

Nicolai Portelli

Council member

Nicolai Portelli is a business leader with experience in the manufacturing, logistics, and building services industry. He is currently the Chief Operations Officer with a leading business services company in Malta. Nicolai is qualified with a Bachelor of Commerce in Public and Private Sector Management, and also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde.
His experience and skills include business development, restructuring, start-ups, international business, and leading high-performance teams.
Nicolai has competitively competed participated in Athletics competitively for a number of years and has represented Malta in four editions of the Games of the Small States of Europe, World and European Championships, several European Cups, as well as the Olympics in Beijing. For a number of years Nicolai was National Champion of the 400m distance and has held National and Championship records in the 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m. Currently Nicolai is a member of the Maltese Olympians Association, and is involved in Sports boat sailing.
