Matthew Azzopardi produced a landmark performance for Maltese athletics after claiming the silver medal in the 800 metres at the Balkan Under-18 Championships in Novo Mesto.
Azzopardi clocked an impressive 1:53.48 to finish second in a highly competitive race featuring athletes from some of the region’s strongest athletics nations, including Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Türkiye, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His achievement is a historic one, marking the first time Malta has won a medal in this event category at the Balkan Under-18 Championships.
There was further reason for celebration as fellow Maltese athlete Isaac Luca Scicluna also impressed in the same race, recording a new personal best of 1:57.84.
Athletics Malta congratulates both athletes, their coaches and support teams for their outstanding performances, which continue to demonstrate the growing strength of Maltese athletics on the international stage.
Athletics Malta also extends its sincere appreciation to Sport Malta and the Malta Olympic Committee for their continued support, which plays an important role in enabling Maltese athletes to compete and excel at international competitions.
