Athletics Malta’s third Open Challenge Meeting brought another National Record with Pembroke’s Bradley Mifsud throwing 56.42m, eclipsing his previous best of 55.41m, established earlier this year. This was the second time he improved the national standard by more than a metre since the beginning of the year.

In the 1500m, victory for Jean Paul Debono (Zurrieq) in 3:53.41 ahead of Evolve’s Shaun Galea (4:01.08) but it was Michael Debattista Segond (Pembroke) who stole the headlines with his third-place finish in 4:02.57 earning the youngster with an Under 18 record in the process.

Carla Scicluna and Claire Azzopardi’s duel on the 100m has become an anticipate fixture of such meetings, with yet another head-to-head taking place on track. Scicluna just edged out her rival in 11.83, with Azzopardi a mere 0.03s behind. Among the men, strong performance by Beppe Grillo in 10.52s, with favourable tailwind.

In the 400m distance, Graham Pellegrini and Janet Richard took top spot with the Pembroke athletes completing the one-lap race in 47.42s and 54.15s respectively.

Among the veterans, Mario Mifsud established new records in the Over 40 categories in both shot and discus (11.36m and 38.03m).

Challenge Meeting 4 will take place this Saturday, 4th May, while a Young Members Meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st May, giving many student-athletes the opportunity to run mid-week given the number of examination sessions being held on weekends.
