Maltese athletics celebrated another outstanding international achievement as Mireya Bugeja produced a superb performance to win gold in the 1500m at the Balkan Under-20 Championships in Craiova, Romania.
Competing against a strong international field featuring some of the best young athletes from across the region, Bugeja delivered a mature and determined race to cross the finish line in an impressive 4:25.81, securing the top step of the podium.
The victory represents another significant milestone in Bugeja’s development and highlights the continued progress being made by Malta’s emerging generation of athletes on the international stage. Her performance in Craiova once again demonstrates that Maltese athletes can compete successfully at a high level when given the opportunity to test themselves against strong overseas competition.
There were also encouraging performances from other Maltese representatives at the championships. Benjamin Salnitro impressed in the 110m hurdles, running 14.24s.
Thea Parnis also produced a commendable display in the sprint events. After finishing second in her respective heat in 11.95 seconds to secure qualification for the final, Parnis went on to clock 12.06 seconds in the final, gaining valuable experience competing against some of the region’s leading Under-20 athletes.
The results in Craiova add to a growing list of encouraging performances by Malta’s young athletes, with international competitions providing an important platform for them to gain experience, improve standards and showcase their potential against elite opposition.
Team Malta was accompanied by Team Leader John Attard Kingswell and was supported by the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
