Who We Are

The Athletes Commission of Athletics Malta represents the collective voice of Maltese athletes, both past and present.

Created with the guidance of the Athletics Malta Executive and built by athletes, for athletes, the Commission serves to strengthen communication, improve athlete welfare, and ensure that athletes are directly involved in shaping the future of our sport.

The Commission acts as a bridge between the athlete community and the federation, promoting transparency, collaboration, and athlete-centered decision making.

Our Mission

  • To represent Maltese athletes fairly and independently
  • To provide structured feedback to Athletics Malta on matters affecting training, competitions, selection, welfare and development
  • To support a positive sporting environment based on respect, integrity and equal opportunities
  • To encourage athlete participation in governance and long-term strategic planning
  • To contribute to the evolution and professionalism of athletics in Malta

Our Objectives

  • Create open and confidential channels for athletes to communicate concerns or suggestions
  • Participate in federation meetings on issues that directly impact athletes.
  • Promote athlete welfare initiatives (mental health, medical support, dual career, anti-doping education)
  • Assist in the development of competition structures, national team preparation, and performance pathways
  • Strengthen the sense of community within Maltese athletics through workshops, outreach and events

Composition of the Commission

Membership includes both active and recently retired athletes, ensuring a balance of experience, perspective, and current competitive relevance.

Role within Athletics Malta

The Athletes Commission provides recommendations to the Athletics Malta Executive Board on matters such as:

  • National team selection policies
  • Competition calendar and event organization
  • National team logistics and athlete experience
  • Anti-doping and safeguarding
  • Development pathways and support programs
  • Training environments and facility requirements

The Commission has an advisory function but holds an important consultative role in shaping federation policy.

  • Regular internal meetings

  • Attendance at federation board meetings when athlete-related topics are discussed
  • Open surveys, feedback forms, and consultations
