On Friday 6th July, in the European Athletics Under-18 Championships being held in Gyor, Hungary the El Aida twins, Jacob and Omar both impressed, by qualifying for the Semi-finals of the Boys’ 200m.
In Round 1, Jacob was 4th in Heat 5 in a time of 22.00 and was ranked 16th fastest from 38 starters while his brother Omar was 3rd in Heat 3 and recorded a PB of 22.02 which have him the 17th best overall time.
In the semi-finals held on Saturday 7th July, both athletes improved on their performances. In Heat 2 of the semi-finals, Jacob was 5th in a very fast time of 21.60. This performance would have given Jacob a new Under-20 National Record, but his run was unfortunately aided by a tailwind of +2.2 m/s.
Racing in Heat 3 of the Boys’ 200m semi, Omar was also 5th. His time of 21.86 meant that he achieved a new national all-time best for the 200m in the Under-18 Category.
The Malta AAA was also represented by Carla Scicluna who was eliminated in the First Round of both the 100m and 200m.
