The Malta Amateur Athletic Association held this year’s Awards Dinner on the 12th December 2013.
In his opening address, MAAA President Anthony Chircop started by wishing, on behalf of the Council of the MAAA, all those present a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New year to all those present for the occasion.
On behalf of the MAAA Council he thanked all the Technical Officials that throughout the year helped the Association to control both the Track and Field and Road Running events. He explained that the assistance of these officials was essential for the holding of the events.
The main reason for holding this event was to honour the best athletes, male and female, in each Track and Field category. Mr. Chircop explained how the Council selected the Athletes of the Year by using pre-set criteria where athletes are allotted points according to their best performances, performance and participation at the National Championships and International Events, National Records that they may have been registered during the year, as well as for medals won in International competitions abroad. He congratulated all those who would be receiving the awards.
Last but not least the MAAA President took the opportunity to thank the leaders of the sports authorities, namely the Kunsill Malti Ghal l-Isport and the Malta Olympic Committee in Malta for their continuous assistance during the year.
Mr. Chircop concluding his address by expressing his gratitude for all the members of the Council, present as well as those who had served the MAAA with him throughout the last eighteen years, especially since he had decided not to contest the election for President of the Association in the next MAAA Council election. The time has come, he stated, for the Association to elect a new leader.
The athletes who were awarded honours were the following:-
|Male||Miguel Grixti, Andrea Cristiano and Stefano Pace Parascandalo|
|Female||Janet Richards – Special Commendation to Laura Sammut|
|Male||Luke Farrugia – Special Commendation to Bradley Mifsud|
