THE TEAM

A two-time Olympian, Mario Bonello is one of Malta’s most accomplished athletes, having represented the country at international level for over two decades. A multiple national champion and record holder, he competed in several editions of the Games of the Small States of Europe, as well as numerous other prestigious international competitions.

Following his retirement from competitive athletics, Mr Bonello remained closely involved in the sport through coaching and administration. Since 2020, he has served as Technical Director of Athletics Malta. Under his leadership, the profile of Maltese athletics on the international stage has strengthened considerably, with athletes achieving unprecedented results at major events. Drawing on his profession as an Architect and Civil Engineer, he was also instrumental in the upgrading of the track facility at Marsa, a project made possible through significant investment by SportMalta.

With his combined experience as an elite athlete, administrator, and professional in the field of infrastructure, Mr Bonello is well positioned to lead Athletics Malta into its next phase of growth and development. He is married to Katya, and they have two children, Andria and Nicolai.

Antonella Chouhal is the Secretary General of Athletics Malta, bringing decades of experience as both an athlete and sports administrator. A former national champion in the throwing events, she holds Maltese national records in shot put, discus, and hammer throw, and has represented Malta in numerous international competitions. She has also built a strong reputation as a coach, contributing to the development of athletes across multiple disciplines while serving as a national team coach in throws.

Her expertise extends to officiating, where she became the first Maltese official to achieve World Athletics Silver-Level Referee certification, officiating at top international events, including major European competitions. Chouhal was recently appointed Vice President of the Athletics Association of Small States of Europe (AASSE) for a two-year term, strengthening Malta’s voice within the European athletics community.

Stefania Cilia Caligari brings over 20 years of experience in accounting and financial management to her role as Treasurer of Athletics Malta. She currently holds the position of Head of Accounts within a Family Office, where she is responsible for overseeing the accounting of multiple entities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and supporting tax advisors with tax computations. Her role requires a high level of organisation, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of financial governance. Prior to this, Stefania occupied the position of Accounts Manager with the Ozo Group of Companies, further strengthening her expertise in managing financial operations across complex business structures.

Throughout her career, Stefania has gained experience across a range of sectors, including hospitality, real estate, and property management, among others. In addition to her accounting responsibilities, she also serves as a Director in two entities within the Family Office. Beyond her professional career, Stefania has always had a strong passion for sport. Although previous injuries have limited her personal participation, she remains actively involved by encouraging her two daughters, Elena and Lana, to pursue and remain engaged in sports. Stefania also has a particular passion for local football.
