Team Malta began its campaign at the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor, Slovenia, with a series of strong performances, ending the first day in fifth place in the 15-nation Division Three competition. Despite the absence of some of its top athletes, the team showed impressive resilience and talent, with standout contributions in both track and field events, including from several promising young competitors.

Among the standout performers was Rachela Pace, who delivered maximum points for Malta with a long jump victory, recording a remarkable 6.39m.

Gina McNamara delivered again by clinching first place in the 800m with a time of 2:10.05, while Matthew Galea Soler earned a well-deserved second place in the 400m, finishing with an impressive 46.90s.

The three athletes will be back in action again today, hoping to add more points for Team Malta.

The women’s relay team also delivered another strong performance securing third place with a solid 46.99s performance.

With a total of 184 points, Malta is currently stands in fifth place, matching the team’s performance from two years ago in Poland. Iceland and Luxembourg lead the standings after Day 1, with Moldova in third place with 197 points.

The event will conclude with the second and final day of competition today in Maribor, with Malta looking to build on this strong start.
