Four athletes represented Malta at the European Running Championships held in Leuven, Belgium, competing against some of Europe’s top running talent. The event, which brought together elite athletes from across the continent, showcased strong performances from Malta’s best.
Luke Micallef participated in the 10K race, finishing with a solid time of 30:34, while fellow Maltese runner Lisa Bezzina completed the same distance in 38:06.
Meanwhile, in the marathon, Simon Spiteri delivered an outstanding personal best, crossing the finish line in 2:23:47. Dillon Cassar also made his mark in the half marathon, clocking 1:07:45.
In the men’s half marathon, Jimmy Gressier of France dominated, winning in 59:45, while Chloe Herbiet of Belgium took gold in the women’s race with a time of 1:10:43. Sunday saw Yann Schrub lead a French one-two in the men’s 10km, while Italy’s Nadia Battocletti won the women’s 10km in 31:10. Aouani stunned with a surprise marathon victory, finishing in 2:09:05, ahead of Gashau Ayale, while Maru Teferi of Israel took bronze. Ouhaddou made history for Spain, winning the women’s marathon in 2:27:14.
