Team Malta delivered a series of inspiring performances at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, competing against some of the fastest and most promising young athletes on the continent.
The standout performance came from Matthew Galea Soler, who advanced confidently through the quarter and semi-finals of the 400m before securing a remarkable fifth place in the final. Clocking an impressive 46.91 seconds, Matthew held his own against Europe’s elite sprinters in a race ultimately won by Ireland’s Connor Kelly. His result marks a major milestone for Maltese athletics and underlines his potential for future success at the highest levels.
There were more record-breaking moments for Malta. Isaac Bonnici produced a fantastic run in the 800m, finishing in 1:51.96 – setting a new national U20 and U23 record.
Sprinter Thea Parnis showed great determination, running the 100m in 12.28 seconds despite a strong headwind of -2.3m/s, and followed this up with a 24.83-second finish in the 200m.
Meanwhile, Ben Salnitro took on the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 55.98 seconds with a solid display of strength and technique.
Mireya Bugeja also represented Malta admirably in the 800m, finishing in 2:13.08.
During this prestigious event, Antonella Chouhal served as a World Athletics referee.
