Mario Bonello has been elected as the new President of Athletics Malta following an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Association held on Thursday evening.
Mr Bonello will serve as President until the end of the current Council term, which expires in 2026.
A two-time Olympian, Mario Bonello is one of Malta’s most accomplished athletes, having represented the country at international level for over two decades. A multiple national champion and record holder, he competed in several editions of the Games of the Small States of Europe, as well as numerous other prestigious international competitions.
Following his retirement from competitive athletics, Mr Bonello remained closely involved in the sport through coaching and administration. Since 2020, he has served as Technical Director of Athletics Malta. Under his leadership, the profile of Maltese athletics on the international stage has strengthened considerably, with athletes achieving unprecedented results at major events. Drawing on his profession as an Architect and Civil Engineer, he was also instrumental in the upgrading of the track facility at Marsa, a project made possible through significant investment by SportMalta.
With his combined experience as an elite athlete, administrator, and professional in the field of infrastructure, Mr Bonello is well positioned to lead Athletics Malta into its next phase of growth and development. He is married to Katya, and they have two children, Andria and Nicolai.
Athletics Malta expressed its appreciation to outgoing President Aldrin Cassar as well as to Darren Micallef, who fulfilled the role of interim President over the past months, for their dedication and commitment to the Association.
