Malta’s Jared Micallef registered a respectable showing at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, completing his 800m heat in 1:46.62. While the result was not enough to secure progression to the next round, it nevertheless marked a strong effort on one of the sport’s biggest stages, alongside the world’s best. His heat was won by David Barroso of Spain in 1:44.94.
Despite having the 59th best time among the 63 participants before the event, Micallef completed his experience on the world stage in 44th place. With the timing achieved in Tokyo, Micallef also secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games 2026.
Micallef, who earlier this year set a new national 800m record at the Australian Championships with a time of 1:46.08, was accompanied in Tokyo by his coach Jayden Ross. His participation capped an impressive season, which also saw him secure silver medals in both the 800m and 1,500m as well as two other silver medals in the 4×400 men’s relay and 4×400 mixed relay at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Andorra, where he also served as one of Malta’s flagbearers.
The Maltese delegation at the championships was led by Athletics Malta Treasurer Darren Micallef, who attended the World Athletics Congress held on the margins of the event, which addressed several issues impacting the future of the sport. In addition, he held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives from other countries, aimed at further strengthening Malta’s presence and visibility within the global athletics community.
